Viacom, Disney, Newscorp and The BBC

Operating Model:
Viacom is a conglomerate company. It's a commercial company not a public service.
Ownership:
Viacom own mainly TV companies and film companies such as MTV and Paramount. However they also own a lot of smaller companies like CMT which is a company that focuses in country music. It has a TV channel and a Radio station. Paramount (owned by Viacom) tends to have decent ratings on film that it releases. For example; Star Treck Into Darkness, which got 7.9/10 star rating on IMDb and The Avengers that got an 8.2/10 stars, also on IMDb.
Market Position:
In terms of the charts, Paramount currently have 3 films in the UK official "Film on Video" charts, including Into Darkness which is currently at 13 (23-01-2014). However Nickelodeon, a children's TV channel which is also owned by Viacom, hold the two top places in the official "iTunes Top 40 Kids Shows" with their show "Sam and Cat".
I think the fact that Viacom is a conglomerate company to these two very successful companies and many other slightly small companies, I would say it has a high market position.
Competitors:
Some of Viacom's main competitors are other film companies that could compromise Paramount like Loinsgate and Time Warner. Also companies that could compromised Nickelodeon, like Disney channel and CBBC.
Products:
. Star Treck into darkness came out on May 16th 2012 and was made by Paramount the film company. Paramount is owned by Viacom.

.Viacom own afew gaming brands. Like the gaming website and forum "XFire" which they obtained in April 2006.

.Nicolodian, the kids TV chanel is owned by Viacom. This channel is most well known for it's TV shows like "Drake and Josh" and "iCarly". However they also make movie's too.

Operating Model:
Disney are a very, very well know company/ conglomerate. Disney is very commercial in the way that you have to pay to be able to watch their channel however they don't  really advertise other things too much.
Ownership:
They name most of the companies that they own after the main conglomerate. For example some of the companies they own are called things like "Walt Disney World", "Disney Channel", "Walt Disney Pictures" and "Disney Press". Some of it's other companies are called "Hollywood records and "Pixar".
Products:
Disney do all kinds of products. There is "Radio Disney", "Disney Channel", Disney movie companies, record labels, magazines and even theme parks!
Market Position:
They have quite a few films in the 2013 box office charts. Firstly is their most recent film: "Frozen" which came out towards the end of the year and still managed to make it to number 4 in the box office charts. Disney also hold 6th and 10th place with "Monsters University" and "Oz: The Great And Powerful"
Competitors:
I would say that Disney's main competitor (from looking at the charts) is Universal or Warner Bros.
Products:
.Disney have been making film's for years and years. Some of the early film's they released are Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and The Little Mermaid

.Disney now have a few channels on the TV. Some of the TV programs shown on these channels include "Hannah Montana" and "Wizards of Waverly Place".

.Disney also now have a few magazines still being published. One of them is called "Action Disney".
Operating Model:
Newscorp are a conglomerate focusing on TV.
Ownership:
However they also own many English newpapers including "The Sun", "The Daily Telegraph" and "The Sunday Times". They are a commercial service and advertise mainly in Newspapers.
Market Position:
The general overview of their 2009 revenues came to around £30.4 billion. As of 2009 they were the 3rd largest media group in terms of entertainment and in 2011 it was the 2nd largest media group in terms of revenue.
Based on the charts, 20th Century fox, one of Newscoprs companies has had quite a few films in the "Box Office Film Charts 2013". These include "The Croods" at 14, "The Heat" at 15, "The Wolverine" at 21 and "Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters" at 51.
Competitors:
I would say that Newscops biggest competitors are Lionsgate and Warner Bro's.
Products:
. Newscorp own National Geographic. National Geographic have a magazine that is still being published on a regular basis.

.Newscorp also own the company Fox which has lots of movie's and TV shows. Some of these include "Glee" (which they bought from channel 4), "New Girl" and the very famous cartoon "The Simpsons"

. As well as doing TV shows on Fox, there is also a version of Fox called 20th century Fox that produces films. Some films produced by 20th Century Fox include "X Men First Class" and "Avatar".

Operating Model /Ownership:
The BBC is a public service TV conglomerate based in the UK. They tend to make there own programs rather then commissioning other companies to make the programs for them. Although the BBC is based in the UK, BBC shows are played in other countries when other channels buy them like the channel "Watch" and "Gold" who often play repeats of BBC shows. The BBC's main source of funding comes from the TV licence tax that Britain's have to pay in order to watch TV. This gives the BBC around £3369 million a year. In 2008, the BBC made £3.4 billion in revenues. The BBC own a number of channels including BBC1, BBC 2, BBC 3, CBBC, Ceebeeies. They also have  a couple of radio channels like BBC Radio 1.
Products:
The BBC tend to specialise in TV and radio but they also do other things like short film's or putting money towards other peoples films and they have websites with information about things like cooking and gardening. They also do magazines.
Competitors:
The BBC's main competitor is ITV. This is a commercial channel with similar views and ratings as the BBC.
Market Position:
One of the BBC's most successful shows "Doctor Who" has got an IMDb rating of 8.9/10 compared to ITV's answer to Doctor Who, "Primeval" which has an IMDb rating of 7.2/10. You can see by these figures that the BBC gets better ratings then ITV but ITV aren't far behind.
Products:
.One of the TV programs that the BBC airs on BBC 1 is Doctor Who which is one of the most popular and most watched British made program in the world. Spin offs of Doctor Who air on CBBC and BBC 3.

.BBC have a magazine publishing decision too. This has published magazines such as "BBC History", "Doctor Who Adventures", "It's Hot", "Balamory" and "Learning Is Fun".

.Another thing the BBC does is radio. The BBC the top 4 places of the top 10 most popular radio stations. Some of the more popular shows played from BBC radio stations include "The Archers", "It's That Man Again", "The News Quiz" and "Today Program".
